As big Billy Joel fans we were keen to see him in residency at the Garden and we were lucky that his 65th concert (which broke the record for artists there) took place when we were in New York. We bought tickets only a few days beforehand and they were in the nosebleed section (Level... Continue Reading →
Cherry blossoms (Sakura), Japan
Shinjuku Gyoen We spent ten days in Japan one Easter in the hope that we'd see cherry blossoms and we were not disappointed. We started in Tokyo (Shinjuku Park is where we found the above blossoms) then travelled to Hakone to see Fuji, Takayama (a great foodie destination), and then to Kyoto before heading back... Sag Harbour, Long Island
We decided to day trip out to Long Island and our local friend's advice was to visit Sag Harbour. We caught the train from Penn station out to Bridge Hampton which took a few hours but was pretty pleasant with some enjoyable scenery. We then got a cab to Sag Harbour. Tourist info and souvenirs... Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
We didn't realise we needed to book in advance in order to go up the Statue of Liberty and when we looked online it was sold out for our entire time in New York. Nevertheless we had no intention of missing out completely so we caught the ferry to Liberty island and were able to... Continue Reading →
Grand Central Station, NYC
It was great to visit Grand Central Station having seen it in so many movies and TV shows. It was every bit as beautiful as we expected and we spent some time taking photos and enjoying cake at the Magnolia bakery there.
Top of the Rock
We were given some great NYC travel tips by friends who had travelled here extensively and my favourite tip was to do Top of the Rock rather than the top of the Empire State Building. Good advice as the view of the Empire State from the Rock was terrific as was the view of Central... Continue Reading →
In and around Times Square
Times Square itself was not my cup of tea - too crowded and busy - still we found ourselves in the area a couple of times as we were staying close by. Naked cowboy We also popped into the nearby Macy's which was fairly underwhelming other than for cheap Levi's however the store itself is... Continue Reading →
The High Line
We walked the High Line one morning and it took us about an hour, at a leisurely pace, to walk from 34th street down to Chelsea market. We both loved it - it's a nice calm early morning walk in a busy city. Views from the High Line
New York City
The Flatiron building After waiting more than 50 years to get there I was determined to see as much as possible and seeing we were there for two weeks we did manage to tick a lot of boxes. My theory was if we walked up and down and across as many streets as possible we'd... Continue Reading →
Dogo-onsen and surrounds
Dogo tram station We walked to Dogo-onsen from our hotel in Matsuyama but returned by tram. We initially had a look around the town and visited the temple. There is also a small shopping arcade offering delicious Hokkaido milk ice-creams and the well known Imabari towels amongst other things. Then to the main attraction: Dogo-onsen... Continue Reading →
